Working near Pasadena, California, I make ceramic sculpture and functional ware with original designs. Most are built from clay slabs rather than on a potter’s wheel. I apply unique textures and painted decorations by hand so that each piece emerges with its own individual character.
My love of wildlife and wild places drives and inspires my art. My goal in working with clay, however, is not to copy nature but to experience it. I’m drawn to organic forms, fluid asymmetrical shapes, natural color combinations, rough textures. The illusion of movement, bends, nicks, and surprises—these fired features record each investigation, exploration, and discovery.
Even when the forms and images are abstract, I hope this work can inspire feelings of recognition or even awe—that the natural world we depend on looks like that, feels like that, invites us in like that—or challenges us with mystery like that, to contemplate our essential connections to a living planet.
